UPPER VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER COLLECTION

INTRODUCTION

In 1985, Piqua Memorial and Dettmer Hospital, Troy, announced plans to consolidate in order to better serve the health care consumers of the area communities.   That consolidation became effective on January 1, 1986, with the establishment of the Upper Valley Medical Center as the governing authority for both hospitals and formation of a UVMC Board with representation from each.

On the morning of February 5, 1986, in a special session, the Stouder Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees also signed an agreement in Principle to consolidate the hospital’s operations with that of the Upper Valley Medical Center.  This merger enables the three hospitals of Miami County to fulfill their mutual goal to offer the most comprehensive and cost effective health care available.

HISTORY

The origin of Piqua Memorial Medical Center can be traced to May 26, 1904, when a letter from Julia Thayer Ball offered funds for the construction of a hospital.  Mrs. Thayer donated funds to erect a hospital which would be dedicated to the memory of her brother, and which would serve as a permanent memorial for all members of the community.  Originally dedicated as Ball Memorial Hospital, the facility later became known as Piqua Memorial Hospital.

Dettmer Hospital was founded in 1953 with a one million dollar bequest from Jacob Gerhard Dettmer, a Miami County native whose fortune was made in the baking powder business.  Mr. Dettmer died in 1934, leaving most of his estate to the people of Miami County for the purpose of establishing Dettmer Hospital.

Stouder Memorial Hospital, Troy, “…The first step toward the realization of a city hospital, long the dream of many ‘Trojans’, was taken on May 17, 1926.

J.C. Fullerton, representing Mr. A.G. Stouder, appeared before the city council and announced that Mr. Stouder had offered to give $200,000 toward a city hospital…”

This newspaper report launched the history of what would hence become Stouder Memorial Hospital.

A.G. Stouder, renowned for his successful leadership of Hobeart Manufacturing, had decided that a hospital would be the most suitable gift he could give to the city where he had made his success.
