Local History

Why do we want to preserve, protect, and share history with our patrons? Many of you are familiar with the old saying that those who do not know history are bound to repeat it. That is a part of it, we should learn from both the successes and failures of our past, as we look to the future. We are known as the Local History and Genealogy Department, meaning our focus is on Piqua and Miami County first, then Ohio, and lastly the nation as it relates to our area. We want to make those materials accessible to everyone who wishes to use them.

In the Local History Department there are extensive files on many things Piqua; from individuals and families, local businesses and industries, houses throughout town, major and minor Piqua events, surrounding counties, states people came to Miami County from, and places people from Miami County may have relocated to. In addition, we have many past Piqua and Lehman High School yearbooks. There is information about the early Native Americans who once called this area home as well as military history.

For the genealogist there are many “how to” materials to help you get started, as well as search engines that will allow you to find out more about yourself and where you may have come from. We are also blessed with volunteers who are always willing to help you begin your personal search.

As you can see, the Local History Department really does offer something for everyone who wants to learn more about our past as a community, or more about your own family.

Stop by and see for yourself what we can do to get you hooked on history.
