HISTORY

The Miami County Mental Health Association was established in 1945 by a nucleus of six interested people. The organization originally known as the Miami County Mental Hygiene Association was the first of its kind in Ohio.

It began in the basement of Piqua Memorial Hospital. The present association name was taken in the early 1950’s.

Established to address mental health problems and social maladjustment, the association is a non-profit, non-governmental, voluntary organization. Its programs are made possible through the five United Way organizations in Miami County – Piqua, Troy, Tipp City, Covington, and Milton Union.

Goals are to improve attitudes toward mental illness and the mentally ill through educational programs, improve services for the mentally ill by keeping legislators informed of needs and problems, to work for the prevention of mental illness and the promotion of mental health, and to provide information services about local resources.
