The Barnhart, Landis, Miller, Teach Collection

 

Introduction

 

The Barnhart, Landis, Miller, Teach Collection was accessioned into the Piqua Public Library Archives and Special Collections on 15 March 2010 as a donation from Ms. Barbara Treon and Ms. Rhonda Heffner.  The collection consists of photographs and documents connected to these four inter-related families.  The collection is housed in two Hollinger boxes holding a total of fifty-five files.  Added to the collection by the archivist but not a part of the collection are four files of census data and other genealogical materials to make the family connections more understandable.

 

The literary copyright has been transferred to the Piqua Public Library and there are no know restrictions on the use of these materials.

 

Scope and Content

 

The Barnhart, Landis, Miller, Teach Collection is housed in two Hollinger Boxes with fifty-five files.  It is divided into seven series.  Series VII contains genealogical materials (census records, obituaries, etc.) which are not part of the collection but are included to make the relations between the families more understandable.

 

The seven series are as follows:

 

SERIES I:  Barnhart Family photographs and documents.  Box 1, Files 1-15

 

SERIES II:  Landis Family photographs and documents.  Box 1, Files 16-24

 

SERIES III:  Miller Family photographs and documents.  Box 1, Files 25-31

          1        Scrapbook compiled by Bette Barnhart Miller a student at Piqua High School.  The Scrapbook covers the years 1931-1936.  The scrapbook contains articles about Piqua High Schools, programs from the YWCA and programs and bulletins from the Congregational Christian Church of Piqua, Ohio.

 

          2        Barnhart family photo album c. 1910.  The photos in the album are not identified.  The album contains forty-eight photographs.

 

          3        Post card greeting cards addressed to Mrs. S. S. Barnhart, Mrs. Sam Barnhart and Mrs. Mattie Barnhart – all appear to be the same person.  Postmarks on the cards are 1910-1914.  There are ten cards.

 

          4        George W. Barnhart (2 photos) brother to Charles, Ruth, Helen and Harry Barnhart

 

          5        Harry Barnhart (1 photo), Edyth Harrison Barnhart (1 photo) and a post card photo of a group of eight ladies with Edyth Harrison third from the right.  The other ladies are (l to r) Myrtle Weaver, Marie Campbel, Iona Schilling, Inez Schilling, Dora Harrison, Edith Harrison, Hellen Williams and Lillian Vester (1 photo).

 

          6        (a) Post card photo of Ruth Barnhart Landis, Mae Landis DeVault and Minor DeVault in front of a tent at the Covington Chautauqua.

          7        Barnhart family photographs from negatives.  (28 negatives and 27 positives)  The photographs are not identified.

 

          8        Barnhart family – the following is written on the back of the photograph: “Grandpa Dye, Dad, Dorothy and Dick at old B&O Depot” Piqua.  Good photo of B&O Depot and a railroad passenger car.

 

          9        Barnhart family gathering or reunion, 12 March 1912 – four photo post cards.  The individuals are not identified.

 

          10      Unidentified photographs found in the Barnhart family envelope:

                   (a) Elderly father, mother and adult son.

                   (b, c) Man seated in and standing next to a glider aircraft.

                   (d) Two cars, c. 1920, parked next to a house.  One car has a red cross symbol on the windshield probably signifying a doctor.  There is a little girl standing on the porch of the house.

                   (e) Man, woman, young adult female, two young adult males and a boy approximately ten years old all posed in front of a house.  c. 1910

                   (f) Studio portrait of a girl in a white dress – possible a confirmation photograph.  The portrait was done by Matthews Studio in Piqua.  c. 1900

 

          11      Newspaper articles containing obituaries, marriage licenses and other information about Barnhart family members and relatives.

 

          12      “Resolutions of Respect for a Deceased Member of Amokee Tribe No. 132 Improved Order of Red Men, Covington, Ohio – January 16, 1930.”  This document was given to the family of S. S. Barnhart.

 

          13      Genealogical notes and documents relating to the Barnhart family and related families.

          22      Tristram DeVault family photographs [Tristram DeVault was born in1917 the son of May Landis DeVault and _____ DeVault (probably Minor DeVault).  May died in 1920 and Tristram was apparently reared by his grandparents Martin and Laura Landis.  Tristram died in 1931 (approx. age 14 years) and is buried in Highland Cemetery, Covington, Ohio.]  NOTE:  Because of the circumstances of May Landis DeVault’s early death and that Tristram was reared by the Martin Landis family and Tristram’s early death, it is very possible and in fact very likely that Tristram Landis and Tristram A. DeVault are the same person.

                   (a) Copy of two photographs – one photo is of Albert E. Miller (1860-1942) and Laura F. Miller (1863-1940); the second photo is of Irene Miller Luckey (1894-1926).

                   (b) Post card photo of three ladies with the following information on the back: “Anna Gard – Hannah’s mother, Lydia Hockins, Margaret Leslie – Bette’s grandmother, about 1910.”

                   (c) Photo of E. L. Miller Cleaning and Dyeing Works on First Street in Shawnee.  “E. L.” stands for Earl Leonard Miller.

          28      Account Book – the following is written on the front flyleaf: “The Property of John T. Hopkinson, Covington Ave., Piqua, Ohio”.  The book contains some expenses for gifts and major purchases from 1943-1946 on the back of the flyleaf.  There is an account for earnings from Favorite Stove and Range Company from 1905-1923. The book also contains an account of his stroke in September 1923 and his death in 1924 along with funeral records and expenses.  There is an extensive list of births, marriages and deaths involving a large number and variety of names.

 

          29      Correspondence with Bette Miller upon her retirements from the Miami County Mental Health Association.  [NOTE:  for further information see MS-201 – The Bette Miller Gray Lady Collection in Piqua Public Library Local History Manuscript Collections.]

 

          30      Miller family genealogy materials.
