TOMAHAWK BEAT, Piqua High School Student Newspaper

INTRODUCTION

Tomahawk Beat was a publication produced by students in the Piqua High School English Department.  The first issue was produced in February 1997 and continued until the end of the 2000-2001 school year.  Advertising was sold to support the publication of the paper.   Tomahawk Beat was revived in October 2004 and continued to 2006 as a part of the Art Department.  It was published without advertising.  Tomahawk Beat was published in the tabloid format on newsprint paper by The Piqua Daily Call. The following is quoted from the statement of “Editorial policy” found on page 12 of the March 1997 issue:

Tomahawk Beat is a publication by the students of Piqua High School.  It also recognizes parents, administration, faculty, and the surrounding community.

Tomahawk Beat was created to inform readers about the community, school, major events (local and global), and the effects these issues have on us as students.

Tomahawk Beat is an open forum to allow individuals to discuss concerns and/or problems which they may face.

Tomahawk Beat hopes to inform, persuade and entertain its readers.

Tomahawk Beat will not publish any story without its first being reviewed and edited by the editorial board and the adviser.  We will not publish any article which is perceived as obscene, disruptive, or an invasion of one’s privacy.  All staff who participates in the production of Tomahawk Beat will be expected to follow all rules pertaining to proper journalistic skills and ethics.  Staff members and contributing individuals of Tomahawk Beat will take all responsibility for all their writing, photography, and any errors which they may contain.

The collection is the property of the Piqua Public Library Archives and Special Collections and is available to library patrons without restrictions.  The collection is housed in a single Hollinger box containing 36 files.  The collection is divided into series by years since volume numbers and issue numbers tend to be inconsistent.
