ACCESS PIQUA TELEVISION ASSOCIATION

VIDEO TAPE COLLECTION (APTA)

INTRODUCTION

The Access Piqua Television Association (APTA) Video Tape Collection was accessioned into the archives and special collections of the Piqua Public Library in a series of donations during the years 2005 to 2011.  The video tapes consist of programs broadcast over the Access Piqua Television Channel 13 and later Channels 10 and 5 and of raw footage tapes shot for editing.  The APTA studio was originally located in the Piqua Area Chamber of Commerce and later moved to the Engineering Department in the Piqua City Building.  The collection consists of 1242 VHS video tapes, a few of which have been copied to the DVD format.  The tapes are housed in the archives of Piqua Public Library and are available for viewing at the library or they can be copied to DVD for a nominal fee to cover costs.

HISTORY

APTA aired its first program, Focus on Piqua, in May of 1995 on Time Warner cable channel 13.  Initially it was a totally volunteer operation.  Editing was done in a closet at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ.  In 1998 the operation moved to the Chamber of Commerce building on the southwest corner of Main and Ash Streets.  In January 1998 Jan Koon became the first staff person with her salary and supplies coming from the City of Piqua cable franchise fees.  In 1999 APTA expanded to 24 hour programming on Time Warner Cable’s Piqua Access Channel 10.  A cable channel realignment moved the Access Channel to cable channel 5 approximately 2006.  The programming was entirely in the VHS format.  In September 2011 the Western Ohio Television Consortium composed of the City of Piqua, Piqua Public Library, the Piqua City Schools and the Upper Valley Career Technology Center assumed control of the Piqua Access Channel and converted to a digital broadcast format.
