The Neumeier-Wagner Collection

 

Introduction

 

The Neumeier-Wagner Collection was accessioned into the Piqua Public Library Archives and Special Collections on June 25, 1921 as a gift from Ms. Marilyn S. Wagner Hatch of Harrison, Maine.  The donation consisted of the following:

  1. The Life and Chronicles of Russel E. and Mary Louise Neumeier Wagner by their daughter Marilyn S. Wagner Hatch.
  2. A Frigidaire Award of Merit for Outstanding Customer Service presented to Wagner Refrigeration Service for the years 1954 and 1955 – a plaque cataloged as 2021.288.0060 in the Library artifacts.
  3. A Delta Omicron Sorority plaque cataloged as 2021.288.0059 in the Library artifacts.
  4. A group of four lapel pins:
    1. An Ohio State University 1932 Graduate pin cataloged as 2021.288.0061 in the Library Artifacts.
    2. A Delta Omicron Sorority pin cataloged as 2021.288.0062 in the Library Artifacts.
    3. A Dayton Power and Light Company pin cataloged as 2021.288.0063 in the Library Artifacts.
    4. A U.S. Flag pin cataloged as 2021.288.0064 in the Library Artifacts.
    5. These four pins were in a blue velvet jewelry case from W. B. Heater Jewelers and Opticians, St. Paris, Ohio and is cataloged as 2021.288.0065 in the Library Artifacts.
  5. A small blue scrapbook titled “My Graduation Journal” which belonged to Mary Louise Neumeier.
  6. The Lena-Conover High School Diploma awarded to Mary Louise Neumeier in 1928.  This document is cataloged as SC-8377 in the Library Archives.
  7. The Certificate of High School Record [or transcript] for Mary Louise Neumeier – 1928.  This document is cataloged as SC-8375 in the Library Archives.
  8. The Lena-Conover High School Diploma awarded to Russel E. Wagner in 1928.  This document is cataloged as SC-8378 in the Library Archives.
  9. The Bachelor’s Diploma awarded to Mary Louise Neumeier in 1932 by The Ohio State University.  This document is cataloged as SC-8376 in the Library Archives.
  10. A large three ring binder containing sixty-four vinyl sleeves and is titled, “Documents Used in Documenting the Lives of Mary Louise Neumeier Wagner [January 14, 1910 – May 22, 1995] and Russel E. Wagner [November 7, 1908 – December 26, 1987].  The documents in this binder constitute the bulk of this collection.

The ownership of the Neumeier-Wagner Collection has been transferred to the Piqua Public Library Archives by Deed of Gift.  There are no known restrictions on the use of the documents or artifacts in the collection.  The collection is available to our patrons for research purposes.  The documents are housed in a single Hollinger box containing 51 files and in four Small Collections folders.

 

 

SCOPE AND CONTENTS

 

The Neumeier-Wagner Collection is divided into the following three series:

  1. 8 X 10 color photograph of Russel E. Wagner – c. 1983.
  2. Birth Certificate of Russell E. Wagoner, Hearne, Robertson County, Texas.  Father’s name is Dan Wagoner and Mother’s name is Eda Wagoner.  Date of birth is November 7, 1908.
  3. Amendment to Certificate of Birth:  Last names changed from “Wagoner” to “Wagner”.  Names on Certificate changed to Russel E. Wagner, Daniel Andrew Wagner and Edith Wilamenia Opperman.
  4. Section plan for Elm Grove Cemetery, St. Marys, Ohio with the location in Section I of the graves of Daniel Wagner, Edith Willamina Upperman Wagner and Kenneth Upperman marked on the section plan.

2          Documents in sleeve number two:  Genealogical Family Record Sheets, one for each of

the eight children of Daniel A. and Edith Wilahemina Wagner:  Howard Harry Wagner; Carl Albert Wagner; Fred Phillip Wagner; Lester Grant Wagner; Rollie Guy Wagner; G;adus Edotj Wagmer Carnes; Kenneth Raymond Wagner; Russel Erwin Wagner.  Also record of the sale of two tracts totaling 80 acres in Paulding County, Ohio from Charles and Ida Opperman to Jacob Myers, recorded on May 3, 1870, and a record of the birth and death of Bertha Opperman, born 1965 and died 1966 at age 13 months.

Galveston, Texas, c. 1925.

            4          Documents in sleeve number four:  Guardian’s Account of Carl A. Wagner who was the

guardian of Russel E. Wagner.  Dates on the accounting are from May 2, 1925 to May 30, 1927.  Also a promissory note in which Carl A. Wagner and Emma M. Wagner promise to pay $500.00 to Russell E. Wagner on or before five years from December 16, 1929 at 6% interest.

            5          Documents in sleeve number five:  Newspaper account of the attack on and subsequent

death of 83 year old Mrs. Emma Margaret Wagner by a 17 year old youth in 1970.

            6          Documents in sleeve number six:  Russel E. Wagner’s report card from Lena-Conover

High School for grade 9, school year 1924-1925.  Also a Certificate Of Honor awarded to Russel Wagner by Lena-Conover High School on May 20, 1927 [end of his Junior Year] for excellence in Mental Attainments, Social and Moral Leadership and Physical Activity.

  2. A newspaper photo of Seniors In Cast of Hilliards High School Production:  Enid Sampson, Russell Morris, Meriel Latham, Ralph Craner, and Ethlyn Schaub.

10        Documents in sleeve number ten:  a collection of four poems.  One is funny about a Ford,

one is a little sexy, one is about forgetfulness titled “A Little Mixed Up”, and the last is in the form of a letter dated “Leap Year Call, August 3, 1928” and is to “Dearest and most respected lover,” and is an offer of marriage.

            11        Documents in sleeve number eleven: 

  1. A composite photograph by Beecher Studio, Piqua, Ohio, of the eleven members of the Graduating Class of 1928, Lena-Conover High School.
  2. A copy of The Lena-Conover Searchlight, volume 3, number 5, May 16, 1928, Conover, Ohio.  This issue of 12 pages is devoted to the Class of 1928.

  2. “RSC – Refrigeration Service and Contracting”, June 1956 – copy of the cover and page 64 of the booklet.  Page 64 contains a photo of Dean Wagner, son of Russel Wagner.

36        Documents in sleeves number thirty-nine, forty, forty-one and forty-two:

  1. Warranty Deed to property in Sharon Township, Franklin County, Ohio which contained the Sharon Motel.  The property was sold by Lura Lee Valentine to Russel E. and Mary Louise Wagner – December 22, 1958.
  2. Contract to purchase the property from Russel and Louise Wagner by The State of Ohio to make way for the Outerbelt Expressway – November 10, 1964

  1. Closing and Settlement Statement in which the Wagner’s received $63,512.23 after the deductions for outstanding loans, taxes, and fee for removal of buildings.  The original sale price was $90,000.00.  The date of closing was January 5, 1965.

  3. Article from the Columbus Dispatch, February 4, 1965 with a photo of a house being burned intentionally by the owner and included in the picture is the Sharon Motel sign.

  8. Release from indebtedness for a loan by Border City Savings.  Russel E. and Mary Louise Wagner are relieved from any debt due to the sale of Piqua Motel to Scot’s Inn Management who will assume the indebtedness of the Piqua Motel.

Weaver of Hilliard, Ohio – in the letter she announces that she has a brain tumor.  The letter is dated December 31, 1960.  This was progressing rapidly and ultimately would lead to her death.

  1. Genealogical notes on the relationships between the Wolcott, DeWeese and Graham families of Brown Township, Miami County, Ohio – Lula DeWeese was the daughter of William H. DeWeese and Sarah M. Wolcott.
  2. Obituary of Miss Lulu DeWeese.
  3. Funeral card for Lula DeWeese who died January 17, 1964.  Funeral at Suber & Son Funeral Home, Fletcher, Ohio, burial at Fletcher Cemetery.
  4. Seven checks written by Mary Louise Wagner as agent for Lula DeWeese to settle outstanding bills to the estate of Lula DeWeese.  The checks were drawn on the Worthington Savings Bank.  Checks were written between January 19 and January 30, 1964.
  5. Affidavit and Release Agreement by which Hugh DeWeese, the only heir of Lula DeWeese, transfers all rights to the estate of Lula DeWeese to Mary Louise Wagner.  The only property in the estate is the remainder of a $2900.00 bank account after paying the bills of the estate.

Senior Play presented by the Class of 1928 of Lena-Conover High School.  Mary Louise Neumeier played the part of Diana Garwood, the heiress.  Russel E. Wagner played the part of Jim Ryker, the lawyer.  This book contains the full script of the play and also two copies of the program.
