THE HYDEMAN BUSINESS MACHINE COMPANY COLLECTION
INTRODUCTION
The Hydeman Business Machine Company Collection was accessioned into the Flesh Public Library Archives on February 7, 1989.
The collection fills two Hollinger boxes and sixteen file folders. The collection covers the years from 1928 to 1971.
There are no restrictions on the use of this collection and the library copyright has been deeded to the public.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS
The Hydeman Business Machines Company Collection is divided into four series:
SERIES I –ORGANIZATION: Contains the setting up of incorporating the business, stock issues and the dissolution of the corporation.
SERIES II –PATENTS RESEARCH AND PATENTS: Contains information dealing with printing machines developed in the business.
SERIES III –PERSONAL: Contains a hand written account by Kenneth M. Hydeman, of the Hydeman family. A newspaper copy shows the retirement of J. Earl Hydeman.
SERIES IV –MOMENTOES OF HYDEMAN BUSINESS: Contains mementoes from the business and examples of some of their printing for customers.
HISTORY
J. Earl Hydeman’s first job, at the age of 12, was at the Red Oak Art Calendar Factory in Red Oak, Iowa. The year was 1894.
After years of further education and working in various printing firms, he came to Piqua in 1928. He purchased the printing business of Watson F. Caldwell. The Hydeman Business Machine Corp. was set up on July 6, 1935. The Board of Directors were: J.E. Hydeman, President; C.F. Helman, first Vice-President; S.W. Hetherington, second Vice-President; W. D. Harbaugh, Secretary; and L. T. Hydeman, Treasurer. Mr. Hydeman developed a machine to print service checks for hotels, restaurants, garages, etc. as they were needed. As the check emerged from the machine, the ink dried immediately. He held two patents on this machine.
The corporation disbanded after four years and Mr. Hydeman and his wife operated a printing business until it was offered for sale in 1971. Mr. and Mrs. Hydeman and their children were exemplary members of the community and were held in highest esteem by their fellow citizens.
